Immunizations
IMPORTANT Reminder to Schedule School Immunizations
The State of Indiana requires students entering PK, K, 6th and 12th grades to have required immunizations before entering school in August. Current students entering 6th and 12th grade will receive information in the spring regarding what immunizations they need for the following school year.
If your child is new to our school, you will need to provide a copy of their current immunization record. If their immunizations were received out of state, the school nurse will not be able to obtain that record for you. You will need to request this record from the organization that provided the immunizations.
ALL students (PK-12) are required to have (2) Hepatitis A vaccines. Not all states require it, so if your child has received immunizations outside of Indiana, they may not have this requirement completed. The minimal interval between the 1st and 2nd dose is 6 months. Your child may start school with 1 dose IF the 2nd dose is due after school begins in August.
If you do not have a pediatrician/family physician for your child and they need immunizations, the Newton County Health Department can provide shots for your child, regardless of insurance status. For more information, or to schedule an appointment, please call 219-285-2052.
If you are not sure if your child needs additional immunizations, you can ask your child's primary care provider to check the CHIRP system. If you do not have a primary care provider, you can contact the school nurse at 219-474-5167, ext 3306, or the health department.
Please feel free to contact me at 219-474-5167 ext 3306 or durhamk@newton.k12.in.us if you have any questions or concerns about immunizations. If I am unable to answer, please leave a message and I will return your call as soon as possible.
Thank you.
